What is a backflow preventer and why does my house have one?
A one-way valve where your sprinkler system meets the public water supply, there to keep water that has sat in sprinkler pipe from flowing backward into the drinking system. Most sprinklered homes on public water have one, usually near the meter, and the water utility cares about it because it protects the whole neighborhood’s drinking water.
Do I really have to test it every year?
Utilities in Maryland require periodic testing of backflow devices, commonly annually, and send notices when yours is due. Ignoring the notice can escalate to fines or, in stubborn cases, water shutoff. The test takes under an hour and costs less than the late fees.
What happens during the test?
A certified tester connects a gauge kit to the device’s test cocks, verifies the check valves and relief valve hold as designed, tags the device, and files the result with your utility. If the device fails, the usual fixes are rebuild kits or replacement, quoted before any work happens.
What does the test cost?
